TRAINS!

*****

Trains like the ones a block from us.

Trains like the ones a block from us.

In the night I hear them
as they make their runs —
meeting time schedules,
delivering goods,
heedless of the weather,
oblivious to
the state of the world in general
and mine in particular,
carrying on a way of life
that is fast becoming
a memory.

During the day
they’re an annoyance —
stopping frequently
across the road,
keeping me from
getting on with my life
that has no patience
for even small pauses,
their whistles teasing
every nerve in my
uptight body
as I sit in the car annoyed,
wanting to get on with my day.

But at night as I lie sleeping,
in the still-awake part of my mind
I hear them as they
run like clockwork —
night after night,
never resting,
while the world dozes on;
and I find it comforting
as their whistles
weave a web of normalcy
about me while I am lost in slumber,
that the world still goes on
whether I am there to
fret over it or not…

And as the 2:15 a.m. lumbers by
calling out its greeting in shrill voice,
I roll over in twilight sleep
and drift along reassuredly in its wake.
