Yay! Fim’s back with another Monday Music Medicine Show. This week she’s poking around the 80’s…

So my beautiful Monday Music Medicine Show friends, when you think of the 80s (those who were there), what song comes to mind? What memory does it bring up for you?  Those who were not incarnate yet, what songs have you inherited from those who you know from that time?

I could have really struggled with this since I switched from pop to country in the late 70’s were it not for the movie Beaches, a three-hanky movie.

A 1988 American comedy-drama, the film stared Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey as best friends driven apart through the ups and downs of life only to find each other again at the end.

The film’s theme song, Wind Beneath My Wings won Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year in 1990. The film was released on VHS in August 1989, with a DVD release on August 13, 2002, followed by a special edition DVD on April 26, 2005.

It was a beautiful song, to be sure. But what made it special to me (besides bawling every time I heard it) was that one day not long after we’d seen the movie, Lord Drollery called me from work. He’d been listening to the piped in music and had heard Wind Beneath My Wings. For some reason a sentimental mood had taken him and he was calling to tell me I was the wind beneath his wings. (Lordy! We were so much younger then!!!) It took me a minute to pick myself up from the floor, but ever since then I can’t hear that song without thinking of that out-of-the-blue phone call… It has a very special place in my heart. It’s something I always held onto during the bumpy parts of our ride.
