The Daily Prompt for today happens to be about one of my favorite things — Earworms! I’ve written about them before!
What’s an earworm? you may ask. According to the Urban Dictionary an earworm is ‘A song that sticks in your mind, and will not leave no matter how much you try (to stop it). The best way to get rid of an earworm is to replace it with another. Be prepared to become a jukebox.’
You can hop on over to Earworms and read about it if you wish. I think it’s interesting that the prompt includes quotes in the Earworm category. But hey! It’s their prompt! And it just so happens that I HAVE had a quote stuck in my head since Christmas Eve. I was wandering around aimlessly at church before the service when one of the guys I know asked me if I was lost. He was teasing, of course. I ALWAYS wander around aimlessly at church.
But my immediate response to him was: Not all those who wander are lost. I could tell he wondered what in blazes I was talking about. 😀 That quote is taken from the poem All That is Gold Does Not Glitter, written by J. R. R. Tolkien for his fantasy novel The Lord of the Rings. It alludes to an integral part of the plot, and describes Aragorn, son of Arathorn, the future king. The poem reads:
-
All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
~~~~~
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring;
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.
- (Sorry. Just HAD to post it here. 😀 )
- I’ve always been arrested by that quote. It seems like for the last 14 years between bouts of spelunking in the cave of my soul, I’ve played the role of Wandering Ranger looking for an elusive me. But I’m not lost. I’m on a mission. I’m gathering information.
- Some people have said to me it’s pointless to try to figure out what’s beneath the quirks and phobias of my life. They want me to just get on with the job of living. But what they don’t understand is that I’m not DOING that job very well. At least it doesn’t seem so to me. I need the resources I’m finding along my journey to help me morph into the best person I can be. Sometimes I get discouraged, though, and start to think they’re right. But then I will find quotes sprinkled through my life like clues on a treasure map, and I KNOW I must continue my journey. I found another clue today!
-
To journey without being changed is to be a nomad. To change without journeying is to be a chameleon. To journey and be transformed by the journey is to be a pilgrim. (Mark Nepo, The Exquisite Risk)
That’s all it took to get my heart racing again. “Pilgrim” is a watch word for me. I love the song by that name by Enya. And I hope that through all this journeying I will become more and more who I was meant to be.
So with the coming year I will be off wandering again journaling my way through a new book. I hope you will continue to travel with me. You never know when you may find some interesting artifacts of your own!
DAILY PROMPT: Earworm
Write whatever you normally write about, and weave in a book quote, film quote, or song lyric that’s been sticking with you this week.
Great post! Very enlightening.I really like the poem from, Tolkien. Kinda the basis for my way of thinking. We wander when we are lost, but all the answers lie in our Wonder. Continued success! #NOTHINGMatters
Thanks so much for stopping by. I do love that poem. Are you a Tolkien fan? But I love that quote equally as well. Helps one decide if they’re just spinning their wheels!
Not a problem. You’ll definetly be seeing me around. Just recently became a fan of his, but I’ve always been a fan of WONDER. Was that another of his quotes? Been spinning for awhile. Time to see how far it can go. Happy Blogging! #NOTHINGMatters, but You!
No, that other quote was by someone named Mark Nepo from a book of his, The Exquisite Risk. I just started reading a book called The Soul of a Pilgrim and it suggests in there that when we take these inner journeys we have some kind of goal in mind. I’d never thought about that before. I’ve just been having fun discovering out-of-order pieces of myself! 😀
I’ll have to check those out. You see what’s out of order, but I doubt if it’s you. On a personal level, I thought that too, but in the big picture, I started to recognize patterns too obvious to be coincidence. Everyone stops short after explaining our existence, as if we’re that important. But if all is made up of the same thing, the purpose would be to relate.
I’ll have to do some peculiar ponderings on that. I have another friend who talks a lot about patterns. I’m never quite sure what that means…
I hear that we talk in riddles. I believe that how we think can be easily confused as assault on others faith, which for me is never the case. In the new year I’ll be expanding on the Wonder of Being. I hope it will start to clear a lot of things up.
I love that I know the quotes from LOTR right away, and don’t have to wonder where it had come from 🙂 This is a truly great post! It speaks to so much of what we’re doing; is very much our current event! And has been what we’re about from the get-go and who we always shall be. It is difficult for those who are not on a similar conscious quest to understand the time we take. But, as another quote goes: “What we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” That quote is a mantra for me.
This is the kind of read which switches the track I’m currently on, when I should be on another track; when I’ve been sleep walking, and I need to wake up. Thank you for this!
Perfect song to go with this very profound offering.
Have you ever had a earworm word? That happens to me all the time. Next time I get one I’ll share it. They’re often the oddest words, but just keep going through my mid, like there’s a kind of music in the word.
Yep, we have been talking a lot about our journeys lately, haven’t we… Maybe those journeys are something that is unique to our generation? Nope, never have had an earworm word. Can’t wait to hear! Should be interesting.
That’s an interesting thought. It didn’t occur to me that it might be generational… OR, that when people reach a certain age, real growth can begin, because we were too distracted when we were younger, and maybe too busy? Either way, I sense – as, in retrospect, I can see, I wasn’t ready to get married until I’d reached a certain point in my life – that I’m where I’m supposed to be, doing what I need to do now that all the rest of the stuff of life is squared away. I think, women especially, are often taking care of everyone else, and we put our own stuff off until we realize it is OUR time now.
Btw, though she has some good things to say in this book, the jury is still out. I’ll let you know how I feel about it. But the timing of the journey is one thing she talks about. She believes there’s usually a triggering event.
Woo hoo! Fim has an idea for a new book when we get through this one. I’ve already got it. It was heaps of fun and would be very different a second time through maybe. I’ll save it for a surprise! 😀
Oui mon ami spécial! (Did I say that right?) That is exactly what we all do whether we recognize it in our lives or not! Are you watching the extended versions? Btw, Calen’s character was based on Eowyn. Loved that woman’s spirit!
Yeah, extended versions. I wanted to be Aragorn, but I guess I’m rather a Boromir kind of character 😜 Bisous…
( 😉 ❤ ) Nah… You're far too much the gentleman to be Boromir. Are you sure you're not an elf? You have the poetic soul of an elf! 😀
You’re too kind to me, ma chère amie. I really can’t identify with an elf, I’m (still) too brown haired and not slender enough. And my poetic expressions make me look more like Tom Bombadil 😄
This was an interesting prompt. I started with a true earworm (first I’ve heard that word which I love) which inspired me but then didn’t fit into the post…But I guess inspiration often transcends itself. Enjoyed your essay, Calen…xo J
You should have left me the link, girlfriend! I have everyone on daily or weekly digest now and sometimes it takes me a bit to get there! LOL What was the earworm you were struggling with? (My last musical one was Happy Trails by Roy Rogers and Dale Evans!
“Baby it’s cold outside!” I know the poem is entirely different in mood, so I had to leave the motivating lines out of it…That song has been running through my mind ever since before Xmas when it played at my sister’s house. And it was cold in Phoenix! In fourteen years, my resistance to cold has vanished.
LOL My niece was going on and on about this song on Christmas Eve, Apparently she and her friends call it a “date rape” song because the gal asks “What’s in this drink?” Oh for it to be 50 years ago when not EVERYTHING in the world was supposed to be so sinister!
