SueBE over at praypower4today has noted a photo challenge for Lent in her blog post from yesterday. It’s not been my habit to GIVE SOMETHING UP for Lent as much as to ADD something. Usually that means notes, little deeds for unsuspecting people, things I wouldn’t normally go out of my way to do. But I REALLY like the idea of this challenge. Trouble is, I’m stuck at home most of the time with a Kodak that has a dead battery and a camera phone that only works half the time (though my son says it’s me not the phone!). But I’m wondering if it would be just as interesting to scour the internet for images for the challenge. Images that symbolize that day’s word for me. In fact, I think I’m going to do that! It would be kind of like a Lenten Scavenger Hunt. So if you’re one of the folks who observes Lent and this sounds interesting, please read SueBE’s post and follow her link to Alive Now. This challenge starts on Wednesday. And thanks, SueBE, for the INSPIRATION! (Picture credit: celebmix.com)
What are you giving up for Lent?
I have to admit I’ve never been wild for this particular practice. Intellectually, I understand it. You are sacrificing as God/Christ sacrificed. On one level I get it. I can repeat the words. On another level I just don’t care.
In part the problem is that I wasn’t raised with this tradition. As a child, it was carefully explained to me that this was a Catholic practice. The picture that you should be getting here is that this is something they do. It is not something we do.
As an adult, I’ve never accepted that explanation. I have given things up for Lent in the past when I felt that doing so would help me focus. One year I gave up soda. Lent without soda ruined my relationship with this now too-sweet beverage.
A big part of the problem this year is the…

I was raised Catholic and I’m probably the most Catholic Lapsed Catholic I know. I am making an effort for Lent to stop cursing. This is because Bonaparte cringes at my gutter mouth. It’s difficult. But more than giving UP. I’m trying to just be a nicer person. I’m trying to be a kinder me over this Lenten season and maybe it’ll carry over when Lent is finished. Dear Hipster Jesus. If I”m a kinder me after Lent, can I go back to cursing like a sailor?
Thank you!

I don’t give up anything for Lent. I found I’m much better at adding something positive. Oh, btw, our pastor introduced us to a Jesus YOUR Jesus might like to hang out with! I nearly died laughing ( ). Really, I know I shouldn’t have, but it so took me by surprise when it came up on the screen during the worship service. 😀

I was raised Catholic, but haven’t been a practicing one for many many years….I didn’t reconnect with any kind of religion or faith until I moved here….I rediscovered my faith on my Soul Strolls….my Church is the beach for as long as I call this island home. I think the idea of a scavenger hunt and sharing something positive as opposed to giving something up in order to show your dutiful in your faith is genius!

Yeah, I can’t wait to give it a shot. Wondering if it would be interesting to add a few comments with each picture. Might make a neat little book to print off at the end.

I like your idea of adding things for that time.
But I do think the internet picture thing would work just fine!
I like the catchphrase, Lenten Scavenger Hunt!

SueBE left a lovely response on her blog regarding a scavenger hunt. She thought it would be worthwhile as well. I think it would be helpful, and at the end of Lent I can print them all out. I’m getting even more inspired now!
