The Daily Prompt for today wants to know: What’s the most significant secret you’ve ever kept? Did the truth ever come out?

1965-mercury-comet-404-2-door-post-sedan-v8-289-at-ps-1I had to laugh when I read this prompt as one incident immediately popped into my mind. When I was in college my parents bought me this little Mercury Comet and my brother, who was just on the verge of taking his driver’s ed class his sophomore year at high school, wanted DESPERATELY to try to drive. So one day while our folks were at work, I let him take it for a spin with me in the passenger seat.

Long story short, we came around a curve in the road and right in front of us pulled off to the side of the road was a policeman, lights glaring, giving someone a ticket. Mike got so fluster (as he knew if he got caught he’d not be able to get his license) he let go of the steering wheel and we careened right into a tree — just behind the police car. Thank GOD we didn’t hit THAT!

I grabbed my brother, threw him over my lap onto the floor (thank God cars still had bench seats then), and scooted over into the driver’s seat. By the time the officer looked up I appeared to be the driver.

Mike and I agreed that was best kept to ourselves. But one day many years later when I was married with a family, my parents were extolling his virtues to me, and I couldn’t take it anymore (especially knowing that he was dealing drugs — which is hardly virtuous) and I spilled the beans! Had to have been 20 years later.

My parents were flabbergasted that I had taken the heat for wrecking that car. The things we do for our little brothers and sisters!!!
