Day 30 — Presence
I know the first thing that might come to mind when spiritual-minded folks hear this word is “practicing the presence of Christ.” And though I understand that, I feel so many of these catch phrases are just off-handed Christianese speak. I think they can do more harm than good because they tend to separate, not unite.
For me “presence” means something different. It means (and this is going to sound really dumb coming from moi who complains all the time about being unable to live in the moment, but!) that when you’re with a person you should really be WITH that person. ALL of you. Not trying to figure out what you’re going to say next so you’re only halfway listening. (Fim, you’ll have to forgive me on this one as I KNOW we’re all over each other when we talk! LOL)
For me presence and empathy are intertwined. There’s really not much more to say. Have you ever talked with a person who makes you feel like you’re the most important person in the world at that moment? Then you’ve been on the receiving end of someone who is practicing presence.
I’m pretty sure the lady in the blue coat is practicing presence with her friend…
Morrie Schwartz is one of my heroes!
