Raili over at soulgifts – Telling Tales did a post called Fool’s Quest in response to Nicola Auckland’s post Book Spine Poetry on her blog Sometimes Stellar Storyteller. The challenge was to raid your bookshelves for interesting titles and create poetry! Nicola used a Dean Koontz theme. Raili used fantasy.

These hummers are stacked two deep…
I couldn’t help myself! I ran to my bookshelves in my “little library” (there are more downstairs!) and wrote down the titles of 84 of my favorite books. Yep, 84! Then I went to work. I am delighted to say I used 63 of them! This was the most fun I’ve had writing (if you can call it that) in a long time! My theme was also fantasy.

The Thirteenth Tale:
Far Traveler
The wicked day!
Rise of the storm…
A thousand splendid suns,
the pillars of the earth,
catching fire.
The earth shook, the sky burned,
and the mountains echoed.
Lightning,
in the ocean of night
The Historian —
A Secret History of Time to Come.
The doomsday book
timeline,
world without end.
Spectres of the past,
remembrance.
The last command —
the doomsday key.
The book thief —
a girl named Sooner,
the heretic’s daughter.
Wench,
eldest,
mystic,
the virgin cure
learning to walk in the dark.
Island of Hope, Island of Tears,
the hiding place.
The mist-filled path,
green darkness,
illusions,
eternal echoes,
whispers from the woods
the name of the wind.
In the garden of beasts,
sepulchre!
Who moved the stone?
State of fear —
the path of Celtic prayer.
City of Bones!
Merlin’s bones!
The crystal cave…
The bell jar:
heart of the sea,
tears of the moon,
jewels of the sun,
the shards of heaven —
four things that matter most.
The last enchantment.
The far arena,
the Valley of the Shadow,
the light of other days.
The growing season,
childhood’s end.
Birthright,
original blessings
year of wonders.
Unorthodox!
Dark inheritance!
Born in fire,
dark force rising!
Dark witch!!!

Thanks. Well, I’ve been meaning to go back through it and use some connecting words to actually make it a little story. Hm… Maybe I ought to do that this weekend. Might be fun and different for a change.

Sounds like great fun. You know, it’s a phenomenon… how when one sets limits on oneself, of form for example, or certain words to use you know, then writing becomes much more game-like and can be giddy good fun. Maybe it becomes easier to get that “I did it!” feeling…

Have you ever visited Magnetic Poetry Saturday over at Elusive Trope’s Specks and Fragments? You might get a kick out of that.

You overachiever, you! Just had to outdo the rest of us, didn’t you? Absolutely brilliant.

Hey Andrea! Did you do it, too? I wanna see!!! But my hovercards somehow managed to get turned off so when I hover my mouse over Gravatars or names there’s no connection to a link so I can come visit! I’m currently awaiting an answer to a SECOND request from the happiness engineers as to how this happened and how to turn them back on again. They may be happy, I’m not! Anyway, post me an actual link in a comment so I can come and see. I can connect to a link. (This is so truly weird because I can’t click on Gravatars or names in my email notifications either. I’m running out of patience…)

Oh yay! Please do. It was fun. But I doubt I’d do it again! It might be fun do try something shorter, but I just got this story in my head and it wouldn’t let go. Did the story come across?

I still have to get that list of all my books, and the books are scattered about the house. Some are still in boxes. But I’m working at it.

Wow, Calen !!! You really went and done did it 🙂 I do recogniser quite a few of the books there. It’s so so much fun, my head is humming with variations … I never do stick to a recipe either after the first time 🙂 Why don’t you write one using what I gather are a shelf or so of cooking books ? Perhaps recipe titles even ? That could be a culinary delight yum, yum 🙂

Love love loved the Thirteenth Tale,,,and Lightening is one of my favorite Koontz books..next to Fear Nothing and Seize The Night!

The Thirteenth Tale was a TOTAL surprise for me. I picked it up at the used bookstore for a couple bucks. I NEVER saw the ending coming! Loved it! I think Lightning is the only Koontz book I’ve read. That genre isn’t a favorite of mine. I’m not a Stephen King fan either. The only thing I’ve read of his is The Stand and Under the Dome. Since I tend to have night terror now and then, I kind of stay away from really intense stuff like that.

Oh I love King…The Stand..The Talisman (can’t even tell you how many times I’ve read that one!) The Dark Tower Series…(book 3 .. The Wastelands..another one I’ve read multiple times!!!)

I love this! and your ‘little’ library! Are these all your TBR books? Brontë

I have two shelves of TBR books. There are 14 on here I haven’t read yet. We have a whole wall of books in the TV room downstairs, and another bunch on a shelf under the stairs. But all my TBR’s are up here. I only have ONE addiction, thank God! 😀 Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. I appreciate it. (Have read everything by Jane Austen except Lady Susan.)

Fabulous, but where are the cookbooks 🙂
Did you start reading “I have lived a thousand years?”

Cookbooks! LMBO! If I was interested in reading them I’d be a MUCH better cook! 😀 No, I haven’t read it yet. It’s on my Wish List at Amazon. The kids will be wanting to know what I want for my birthday. That’s how that works. 😉
