The jets from Hill AFB
are flying low tonight,
only feet above our roof
— or so it seems.
Here I sit in my chair
in the soft lamp light,
a biography of a
World War II survivor
lying open in my lap.
Eyes closed, I try
to imagine how I’d feel
if those were enemy
planes overhead
getting ready to drop
their bombs on my home.
I can’t even conjure up
the terror she must have felt.

(I’m reading I Have Lived a Thousand Years: Growing Up in the Holocaust by Livia Bitton-Jackson. Thanks, Bridget, for the recommend.)
