Today’s Sunday Sundries is an emotionally charged topic for a lot of people. The prompt from 500 Writing Prompts by Piccadilly Inc. wants to know:

Do you believe in soul mates? What is your definition of a soul mate?

I do NOT believe there is such a thing as soul mates in the romantic sense of the word which is how I believe most people usually like to define it. This supposed soul mate would seem to be someone who feels the same way I do about life, philosophy, love, yadah, yadah, yadah… But my feeling is if you both feel the same about those things, then ONE of you isn’t necessary.

I believe, instead, that certain personalities attract each other. And if that’s the case, you could logically have any number of soul mates. But let’s loose the mates since that’s a term that most often comes into play in a romantic relationship. Let’s use the Gaelic word Cara, Friend.

I love the expression Anam Cara, soul friend, and it makes far more relational sense to me. What’s an Anam Cara? Here’s what the Anam Cara Therapy Center has to say about it.

In Celtic tradition, an Anam Cara is a teacher, companion or spiritual guide. With the Anam Cara you can share your innermost self to reveal the hidden intimacies of your life, your mind and your heart. This friendship cuts across all convention to create an act of recognition and belonging that joins souls in an ancient and eternal way. In everyone’s life, there is a great need for an Anam Cara, a soul friend. In this relationship, you are understood as you are, without mask or pretention. When you are understood, you are at home. Love is the threshold where the divine and human ebb and flow, one into the other.

Love is the most real and creative form of human presence. An expression of human consciousness, this love includes a depth of awareness and reverence for presence. Where consciousness is dulled, distant or blind, the presence grows faint and vanishes. Therefore awareness which brings integration and healing, is one of the greatest gifts of this friendship. As a result, you look, and see, and understand differently. You refine your sensibility and transform your way of being in the world. The Anam Cara is a loved one who awakens your life in order to free the wild possibilities within you.

Now doesn’t that sound like a better bet than someone you’re going to fall in and out of love with on a regular basis, because if we’re honest, that’s the way romantic relationships are. They have to have room to breathe and grow, and sometimes that sucks the life out of the romance, at least for a time.

I suppose I’m being a little flip about this, but it’s 11:28 p.m., my eyes are nearly closed, and my brain is not fully engaged. So maybe some of you could set me straight on this and tell me if I’m missing the mark here? . 😀
