Camp NaNoWriMo is over. This was my first year participating in the Camp, though I did do NaNoWriMo in November 2013. I managed to knock out 90,000 words that year and ended up with a manuscript — I kid you not! — called Glencara’s Bane, which is still sitting here waiting to be edited!
Christina over at The Rolling Writer (who is an utterly awesome writer with three books under her belt — The Desolate Empire series — and another one nearly ready to go) gave me a nudge in the direction of camp. Gotta admit it was kind of a fun experience. I got to be in a “cabin” with 12 other campers (including buddies Christina and Colleen). They were all lovely people and dedicated writers.
Since it was my first time and didn’t know quite what to expect, I played it safe and set my goal at 7500 words. I finished camp at 10,004, all from the Seeker journey.
I really encourage anyone who likes to write to participate in these two events. It’s amazing, sometimes, what a little structure can do! And thanks, Christina, for the invite. I want to do it again next year!!!
I’ve never heard of Camp NaNoWriMo. I’ll have to check it out!

The sun is setting, the crickets are chirping, and Camp NaNoWriMo’s Creativity Garden is a riot of blooms and fruit. This July, 30,898 writers tended to a project, watering their stories with regular inspiration and hard work. It’s our biggest session of Camp NaNoWriMo yet… and we’re so sorry that it’s over.

Ah gee, thanks hon. It wasn’t much of a stretch, though. I was already into the story. Have a total of 18,000 words at the moment.

Nice work Calen, congratulations! I experienced my first NaNoWriMo camp last month but unfortunately I did not have the same experience as you. My Cabin Mates were great, but we all faded early in the month. I’m nevertheless undeterred. I saw camp NaNoWriMo as putting my toes in the water; this coming November I’ll dive in. Doing the camp gave me a real insight into how challenging a month of serious writing can be (and I already write every day). I’m eager to see if I can last the distance in November.

When I was working on Glencara’s Bane, I had my outline for the whole book done before the first of the month. It was pretty detailed. It helped me sail through most of that book. It was a first draft so I wasn’t editing as I went — though I’m wondering now if that was a mistake as I seem to have lost my steam, too much to start the editing process. Was more than a little surprise when I ended up with enough words that I’d have to cut some. It was kind of exciting, though. I guess there are other ways folks work toward November 1st getting ready. I may try to edit it this year. But I have some research to do. I got some of the historical stuff wrong. I suck at researching on a computer!

I planned my novel over a year ago, but I stalled after the first chapter. I hope to write the rest of it in November, although my ideas for it have changed a little. I’m going to go with the general plan I developed ages ago and wing it with the new ideas. I used to dislike editing too, but lately I’ve come to enjoy it. I used to sew most of my clothes; editing is like putting in the zip, finishing off the hems, sewing on the buttons, etc. It means you can wear that beautiful something you’ve made. I also find if I leave something for a while I realise a lot of the writing is good. I suspect your novel is better than you think it is, and deserves to be worked on, Calensariel. You may even enjoy the editing! Cheers, Janet

My biggest stumbling block with the manuscript? I can’t get the main character right. I LOVE all my other characters. They just seem to have a life of their own. But Claire just totally eludes me. I love the story. It’s a gypsyesque mystery. Just don’t seem to be able to strike the right balance in her personality. The other thing is I suck at research. You seem to do well with that judging from your list of reference on your last post. I was impressed! 😀

Somehow I missed that you were doing Camp NaNoWriMo this month, but I should have been able to guess. Congratulations on getting all that writing done! I’ve done 3 NaNoWriMos and 2 camps in the past, but I need NaNoEdMo at this point, so I’m taking a break.

That’s great! Camp is a lot of fun and I like being able to set your own word count goals. I sat this one out, but am looking to gear up for November’s full Nanowrimo.

Hey Karthi! Haven’t been to your place for awhile. When I lost half my follows, I couldn’t remember the name of your blog! And here you are! It’s good to hear from you. How are you?

WP did some updates and for some reason of 72 blogs I (and several other people) was following about a third of them went bye bye. And though I knew their first names, I didn’t know the name of some of their blogs. When I went back in a followed you again today I remembered your new header! Snazzy! Yep, I’m ornery as ever! 😀
