This prompt from Self-Discovery Journal: 121 Thought Provoking Questions by Shalu Sharma is really right up my alley. You see I’m a “huge, HUGE” (pardon my use of one 20161111_152948of Trump’s favorite phrases!) fan of Highlander the TV series with Adrian Paul and Alexandra Vandernoot. SUCH a huge fan that I even have the black satin baseball jacket with Duncan’s katana sword and the Highlander motto on the back: There can be only one! Only one what? you may ask… Only one IMMORTAL!

I can still recall those famous words of Duncan MacLeod at the beginning of every episode which you can hear right at the first of the video below:

I am Duncan MacLeod, born four hundred years ago in the Highlands of Scotland. I am Immortal and I am not alone. For centuries we have waited for the time of the Gathering, when the stroke of a sword and the fall of a head will release the power of the Quickening. In the highlanderduncan4end, there can be only one.

Honestly, I used to think it would be fun to BE immortal. But a scene from the very first episode gave me real pause for thought. It’s Tessa Noel’s birthday and she is pondering her life with an immortal… (Skip over to 13:00 to hear her thoughts, and if you can hang out till 15:40 you’ll hear Duncan’s response about being “naked and alone.”)

It made me stop to think about what I have with Drollery. About how comfortable it is to grow old ALONG with someone. To have been through it all. To grow old and wrinkly together and not have to hide from each other. And yet how they usually see you in their mind the same way they did when you first met or on your wedding day. You know, that’s not something I’m willing to give up. It’s a precious gift.

And as I’ve been sitting here talking to Droll about the post this morning, he brought up something I hadn’t thought of. In a very REAL way we are ALL already immortal. Our bodies are made of energy and science has explained that there is a finite amount of that. None is every destroyed (and as I understand it), no more is ever made. So when we pass from THIS existence of our life, we pass into another one. Who can say what that will be? Heaven? Reincarnation? I don’t know. But I think that’s immortal enough for me…
