So often I find myself feeling frustrated with the obvious shortcomings of wireless communication. The first line of this poem — perhaps a lament might be a better word — kept running through my head last night till I finally had to write it down.

out of context

like a politician’s misleading quote,
you only know my life taken out of context.
occasional phone calls, snippets of emails,
flights of fancy scribbled across a blog,

and yet there is so much more to me
after the phone goes silent,
between the lines of my dashed-off thoughts.

surely by now you must think my life
is nothing but chaos and hopeless wandering,
that I’m always an emotional mess.
but like an iceberg, so much of my normal life
goes unobserved or unnoticed…

i wish i could overturn that unseen mountain for you
so the calm times, the quiet, happy times
are what you would see most,
for in context i’m really a capable,
happy, boringly normal person.

perhaps in this age of internet communications
that old saying is even more true than ever —
you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover —
or a person by only an excerpt of their life.
