Clothes

If you were to gather all the clothes you have ever owned in all your life, you would have your autobiography. (Linda Grant)

`
Wow! What an interesting quote! And how true IS that. I know it sure would be for me because I lived through the Hippie days!

I read Harula’s post for today just as we were leaving to go out to dinner. I thought how in the world am I going to do a post about CLOTHES? CLOTHES you get for Christmas? I don’t ASK for CLOTHES for Christmas. Special CLOTHES you wear for, say, going out to dinner on Christmas Eve? Hm… Jeans and a t-shirt? What’s there to say about that. The truth is, I don’t really think CLOTHES can tell you much about a person at all. Heck, I used to watch the TV show “What Not To Wear” and could mimic their style with little trouble. But what you saw on the outside was NOT who I was on the inside.

downloadThen I had an interesting encounter at the restaurant. I was watching one of the cooks make these heavenly deviled eggs. She’d crack the shells, slip it off slick as snot on a door knob (as my old gaffer used to say), cut the egg in half, and scoop out the yoke to make the filling. I was impressed. I mean MY cooking is famous infamous, but I can’t do that! I cannot seem to boil eggs correctly so the shell just slips off. I end up peeling half the egg away with it. So, figuring she was a well-trained chef all decked out in a fancy apron and hat, off I went to ask her what her secret was.

1506-blog-why-quick-service-restaurants-need-to-cook-up-ways-to-engage-hispanicsI went up to the counter and said, “Excuse me.” She looked up and I asked her how she managed to boil all those eggs so perfectly (she had a HUGE bowl of eggs). She got this puzzled look on her face and then said, “No English…” She shrugged her shoulders and had a concerned look on her face. It occurred to me she may have thought I’d come up there to complain. I just pointed to the eggs and smiled saying, “Love those!” She visibly relaxed.

It was a great surprise to find she only spoke Spanish. And it made me realize how quickly I can form an opinion about someone, good or bad, just by the CLOTHES they wear. Now for all I know she could be a well-trained chef from Mexico! But I got the point I was supposed to get. Malcolm Muggeridge, a British journalist, author, media personality, and satirist, once said:

…every happening, great or small, is a parable whereby God speaks to us; and the art of life is to get the message.

`
So the moral/message of the evening was, don’t judge a person by what they’re wearing. Got a feeling it might be a miss more often than a hit…
