Couldn’t let the day get away without revealing our last TV show on the April A to Z Challenge. I’m SURE most of you got it. BUT in case you didn’t, it was…

Zorro

To put it simply, with his deaf partner Bernardo manning the bat cave Z cave, Don Diego de la Vega opposes the corrupt tyrants of Spanish California as the masked swordsman, Zorro.

Zorro (Spanish for “fox”) is the secret identity of Don Diego de la Vega, a fictional character created in 1919 by pulp writer Johnston McCulley. He is a Californio nobleman living in Los Angeles during the era of Mexican rule (between 1821 and 1846), although some movie adaptations of Zorro’s story have placed him during the earlier Spanish rule.

The character has undergone changes through the years, but the typical image of him is a dashing black-clad masked outlaw who defends the commoners and indigenous peoples of the land against tyrannical officials and other villains. Not only is he too cunning and fox-like for the bumbling authorities to catch, but he also delights in publicly humiliating them.

Zorro is most closely associated with Joaquin Murrieta Carrillo (c. 1829 – c. July 25, 1853), also called the Mexican Robin Hood or the Robin Hood of El Dorado, who was a famous figure in California during the California Gold Rush of the 1850s. Depending on the point of view, he was considered as either an infamous bandit or a Mexican patriot. Well heck, ladies! We like a little “bad boy” in our men, don’t we??? 😉

And there you have it. My take on the April A to Z Challenge for 2017. Thank you all so much for showing up for all these play dates. I really had a lot of fun. And I’m delighted I picked up so many new friends to follow. I enjoyed reading all your blogs, and I’m already thinking about what would be fun to do for next year! I know. Crazy lady, huh? But wait! You thought I was done, didn’t you!!! Not so fast. I’d like to leave you with just a little bit of history about ANOTHER masked man before I go…

`
The Lone Ranger

This was another one of my favorite westerns and I VERY recently found out something interesting about him. Some people think that the legend of the Lone Ranger was based on an actual person, U.S. Deputy Marshal Bass Reeves. He was the first black lawman west of the Mississippi. Bass Reeves rode a big gray horse, wore a black hat, and gave out silver dollars as a calling card. Could it be true? Who knows for sure? But his history is really interesting. If you’d like to know more about him, you can find it here: Police History — Was U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves the real Lone Ranger?
