Over at Along The Interstice “Eliot Dybden” had a go at writing a shadorma. A shadorma is a syllabic poem with a meter of 3/5/3/3/7/5 thought to have originated in Spain.
It’s been another one of those weeks for me as I continue to struggle with what my new norm is living with Myasthenia Gravis. This week my heart went into Super Ventricular Tachycardia and had to be stopped and jump started again. It was a scary procedure. I now know what it feels like to have a heart attack and it DOES feel like there’s an elephant sitting on your chest!
But all is back on track and I even gave driving a shot yesterday. Just to the store (about a mile away), but it was a huge step for me.
Now I’d never heard of a shadorma before, but it was a short enough form I thought I’d tackle it and see what I could come up with. So as I sat here pondering everything that’s happened since May, I actually managed to write one! And THAT is a huge step, too! Maybe I’m starting to come out of the prednisone fog!

Paradigm Shift
my life changed —
middle-aged to old
on may 4th,
all at once,
no warning i’d reached the top
of the down-hill slide…

So sorry you had to go through that, Lady Calen! I’ve missed some posts recently – changing my blog somehow turned off notifications. To me, the paradigm shift isn’t about feeling older, but that you know your life has meaning. That you affect people in a positive, powerful way, and that we’d all be worse off if the world didn’t have such a bright light in it. I felt it just in the two weeks without notifications. I said to myself, something is missing, but couldn’t figure out what it was!! Welcome back, dear heart (even though you never really left!) With the world in the state it’s in right now, you’re a star in the night-time sky.

You’re very sweet, Ruth. I appreciate the thoughts. And I know what you mean about it seeming like something’s missing. Blogging has become so much a part of who I am. And at the moment I’m not journaling as my writing really is horrid with my hands shaking. I feel in some strange way like I’m being died my words become flesh, if that makes any sense at all!

I am very sorry to hear of your health challenges Calensariel. I’ve been away from blogging for a few months and didn’t know, but I gather you have had to take some time off too. Sending you positive vibes and thoughts for a return to full health and vitality. Appreciated the honesty of your shadorma.

I appreciate the positive vibes, Denzil. I’ll take all I can get. This is sort of like an enforced “being still” on so many levels. 🙂

sorry to hear about your challenge. i’m having to make the adjustment, too, with the “down-hill side” — your shadorma is splendid, the flow and thythm pulling me in til that last line and making me linger, pondering…

Thanks, hon. It’s a little dark, but it sure is the way I’ve been feeling. So glad to have you back around. 🙂

thanks. 🙂 i’ve been talking with another about the need to paradoxically ’embrace’ the shadow side that arises from time to time. but it is just as important to embrace the light.

I’m sorry you had to go through such a scary life experience, and very grateful you had help to see you through it. Your shadorma is poignant. I have to resist the idea of being old as a down-hill slide, but can see it must feel like that right now, and admire the way your poem beautifully expresses the feeling. Peaks and troughs like the rest of it, let’s hope, with an ever-changing perspective on what makes a peak and what a trough, as you’ve been pointing out so bravely. Sending a hug x

So sorry to hear you are still having these major problems Cheryl. You don’t deserve it. I was hoping you were nicely on the mend. However, maybe it was just a blip and you are really on the mend. It is always good to hear from you. All my best wishes – Opher

Thanks, Oph. I understand that it actually had nothing to do with the MG. That’s a good thing! Trying to find a balance between not keeping the scary stuff hidden inside while pushing myself to keep functioning and be positive. Trying! 😀
