Do you ever have a moment (or more) of whimsy? This summer I discovered I have a whimsical moment every morning and didn’t even realize it! What is a whimsy, you ask? Well according to the dictionary it’s a playfully quaint or fanciful behavior or humor.
So what’s my whimsy? This past May when I was in the hospital with pneumonia I was exhausted and the doc said I wasn’t getting enough protein. No surprise to me since Spark People has been telling me that for years as I’ve logged my food. But I’m not much of a meat eater and I’m allergic to peanut butter, so I always struggled to figure out how to do that. Then a nurse suggested drinking an Ensure for breakfast every morning: 16 grams of protein in the original. I thought what the heck, why not! So HL dutifully went out and bought me a case of Chocolate Ensure along with some whimsy…
For some reason I’ve never quite figured out, the man thought I might enjoy this experience more if I were to drink it with a straw. So here he comes home with a big package of colored plastic straws. Now I’m a recycler, and my first thought was what a waste! I didn’t want to hurt his feelings, though, so I started using them with my morning “shake.”
But the funniest thing has happened and I’ve only just noticed. Every morning when I get my straw out, I close my eyes and pick one. I don’t want to see what color I’ll get. I want it to be a surprise. Now how dumb is that? It finally dawned on me today that it’s that little girl inside me that was always so serious and would never have allowed herself to get such a kick out of colored straws that pops out for just a few fleeting seconds when I choose my morning sipper. THEN I realized I actually look forward to opening that drawer and getting a surprise. They’re so pretty! 😀
Still feeling a little guilty about the whole waste thing, I asked HL this morning if he thought that was dumb and I shouldn’t buy anymore. He said, “Oh, I think you can be forgiven for recycling a few colored straws now and then…” as he rolled his eyes and went back to eating his toast.
I admit to feeling a little odd about it, but if it leaves me smiling at breakfast every morning, I think I can live with it. 😀
What about you? Do you have any weird, whimsical quirks in your life? (Someone PLEASE tell me they do so I don’t feel like the only wing nut here!)
