I am SOOOOOOOOOOO on a toot today! One of the news articles I read this morning was about the White House press corps participating in Take Your Child to Work Day and how Trump ridiculed them and made some very inappropriate comments to those kids about their parents.

“You know, your parents are being very nice right now, I can’t believe it,” Trump said. “You know why? Because they don’t want to embarrass themselves in front of you.”

And to one kid, the president said they had “a nice father about 80 percent of the time.”

But the thing that bothered me beyond imagining — scared me might be a better way to put it — was this:

Trump then asked the kids if they wanted to go inside the Oval Office, to which they responded with an overwhelming “yes!” And when asked whether their parents should be allowed to join them inside, the kids chanted “out!” in unison.

“Out! I agree,” Trump said. “C’mon let’s go, we’ll go to the oval office.”

He actually asks them to make a decision that will separate them from their parents. (See the story here…)

I’ve been reading WWII history for years and I can say without a doubt this is exactly the same road Germany went down with the Hitler Youth. Below is part of a curriculum of studies from the site Facing History and Ourselves, a nonprofit international educational and professional development organization. Their mission is to engage students of diverse backgrounds in an examination of racism, prejudice, and antisemitism in order to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry.

This is from the overview of Lesson 11, Life for German Youth in the 1930’s: Education, Propaganda, Conformity, and Obedience FROM THE UNIT: Decision Making in Times of Injustice Unit.

In Lesson 11, students explored the impact of Nazi propaganda on the attitudes and actions of the German public. One of the critical audiences for this propaganda was German youth. Time and time again, Hitler spoke of the importance of indoctrinating German youth to Nazi ideals. In a 1935 speech to Nazi party officials, Hitler declared, “He alone, who owns the youth, gains the future,” and four years later he announced, “I am beginning with the young….With them I can make a new world.” What kind of youth did the Nazis believe would best support their plans for Germany? On that point, Hitler was very specific. In the following speech, he described the ideal German youth:

“A violently active, dominating, intrepid, brutal youth—that is what I am after. Youth must be all those things. It must be indifferent to pain. There must be no weakness or tenderness in it. I want to see once more in its eyes the gleam of pride and independence of the beast of prey….I intend to have an athletic youth—that is the first and the chief thing….I will have no intellectual training. Knowledge is ruin to my young men.”

As soon as the Nazis came to power, they set in motion the process of permeating the life of German youth with Nazi propaganda. One of the critical spaces where the Nazis hoped to indoctrinate German youth was in the schools.

I don’t know about you, but it sure seems like we have a hard time believing and learning from history. I found myself saying to his nibs at breakfast, so what does this look like when you set it next to Ben Carson’s decision to up the rent for low-income families and take away their child credits for daycare while making them find a job that pays $5.54 an hour? It will hit single mothers the hardest. And when they can’t pay for daycare and must leave their kids alone at home, how long before DCFS starts intervening and taking those children away from their parents? And what will they do with them? They’re already separating children from parents who try to cross our borders. I totally believe the headline on another article, that this administration has declared war on the least fortunate people in our country.

How the bloody hell did we get here? And why are those people we elected in Washington not doing a damn thing to prevent this corrosion of our values and our countries? I would like an answer to that from every one of those elected officials on BOTH SIDES of the aisle!

I’m certainly no historian, and this is just MY opinion, but I really think this is one of those “Let the citizens beware” moments… Am I nuts?
