I’m becoming an enthusiastic fan of Naomi Shihab Nye. Not just of her wonderful poetry, but of her as a teacher and as someone who really inspires me to continue my love affair with poetry.
I was excited to run across these two videos this morning. I love the way she talks about making poems your own. The first is about how to TEACH poetry, the second about WRITING DOWN YOUR OWN THOUGHTS. I thought I’d post them in case any of you were further interested in what Ms. Nye had to say. I hope you’ll identify with and learn from them. Enjoy!

These are great videos. Thank you so much for posting them. I have been doing something similar to her three sentences – I have been writing down every day three observations, no judgement or evaluation, just a description of what I see or hear or otherwise experience. It is a great exercise, especially for writing haiku.

Guess I should try that! (But then it would probably end up as a haiku! LOL)

One of my most favorite poets! And I actually know her! Thanks for sharing this, I hadn’t thought about her, or poetry, in a long while. She’s gotten older. I met her in the 80’s!!

Hey Fish! You were the one who introduced me to her the first poem I did of hers on here. I’m so glad. She’s really good.

I have to be honest, I could not remember if it was you that I wrote to about her, or someone else!! Getting old, I guess. You’ve done a very nice piece about her. And thanks for the video.

I so love watching poets read their own work because you can SEE the story as well as hear the words. Especially when they take the time to explain before hand like she did. I must admit I find her very intriguing, both as a poet and as a person — not to mention a teacher! Thank you so much for introducing us! 😉

Me, too! In fact, I bought the book “Poetry For Dummies” and found out just how dumb I AM when it comes to poetry! I really appreciated her remarks about not having to be so adept at understanding poetry to enjoy it.
