broken hallelujahs
it’s 2:15 a.m.
and Leonard Cohen
is singing quietly in my ear,
his gravely voice muttering
the story of David’s secret chord
that pleased the Lord
I wonder
how many versions
there are of this song,
how many baffled Davids
have stumbled through
how many minor falls,
how many major lifts
were they so wrong to seek
the same holy comfort,
to touch in order to feel,
to take in order to give,
only to realize
as the hallelujah at last
errupted from their lips
it was broken —
they were broken
but what Cohen didn’t say
was that even a
broken hallelujah
reaches the heart of the Lord

LOVE this, also because the song has such a strong personal meaning to myself. This is a piece of art and made me reflect on the lyrics👏🏽💛

Thanks, hon. I think I listened to 20 different versions of this! Everyone and their pets has done it! 😀 It’s a very meaningful song.

I had his version (a later one) posted first. But I was fascinated to see how many people had done the song. I first heard it on So You Think You Can Dance.

It’s becoming one of mine, too. Especially since I’ve had four people send me other versions of it to listen to! LOL

I like the John Cale version, but I love the way Neil Diamond sings it. It’s so simple and unflashy. 😀

I don’t know about that Cheryl. At least it might be a eulogy to the spirit in nature, the harmony and balance. We desperately need to celebrate that and cease destroying it.

Actually, Opher, it’s about how badly the wounded need each other.
