Sometimes you feel like you need to go.

There’s an art to disappearing
from people’s lives.
The key is to fade away
like ones lost to death —
a little at a time.

First your voice should become quiet
as you withdraw more and more
from conversation.
Next your eyes should be downcast
so they forget to make contact with you.

Finally, absent yourself
from their presence,
but just a little at a time
so they begin to get used to
your not being around.

And one day they will look
and realize you’re not there anymore,
though they won’t quite remember
when it was you left.
Chances are they’ll just figure
you’ve stepped away for awhile
and you’ll be back when you feel like it.
It may never even cross their minds
that you’ve gone for good.
Nor will they wonder why.

But once in a while you may be blessed
with friends who will actually come looking for you.
And as wonderful as that will seem,
those will be times of deep soul searching
on your part as you try to understand
why you felt the need to leave in the first place.

Life is a series of beginnings and endings. We leave one job to start another; we quit cities, countries, or continents for a fresh start; we leave lovers and begin new relationships. What was the last thing you contemplated leaving? What were the pros and cons? Have you made up your mind? What will you choose?
