Sometimes you feel like you need to go.
There’s an art to disappearing
from people’s lives.
The key is to fade away
like ones lost to death —
a little at a time.
First your voice should become quiet
as you withdraw more and more
from conversation.
Next your eyes should be downcast
so they forget to make contact with you.
Finally, absent yourself
from their presence,
but just a little at a time
so they begin to get used to
your not being around.
And one day they will look
and realize you’re not there anymore,
though they won’t quite remember
when it was you left.
Chances are they’ll just figure
you’ve stepped away for awhile
and you’ll be back when you feel like it.
It may never even cross their minds
that you’ve gone for good.
Nor will they wonder why.
~~~~~
But once in a while you may be blessed
with friends who will actually come looking for you.
And as wonderful as that will seem,
those will be times of deep soul searching
on your part as you try to understand
why you felt the need to leave in the first place.
DAILY PROMPT: If You Leave
Life is a series of beginnings and endings. We leave one job to start another; we quit cities, countries, or continents for a fresh start; we leave lovers and begin new relationships. What was the last thing you contemplated leaving? What were the pros and cons? Have you made up your mind? What will you choose?
I think we’ve returned, in some ways, to being the nomadic people our ancestors were, but society of today is less understanding of the need to move on. It’s not always about believing a person doesn’t fit in anymore – not in the sense of irreconcilable differences. It’s often about people finding themselves being drawn in by something, and where there is less to do in one place and more in another, one begins to take precedence over the other, if that makes sense.
Yeah, it does make sense. I do see people move on like that from time to time. Especially at church. Hadn’t thought about that in relation to what I was thinking. Good point.
We were always Gypsies. We’re just giving into the whims of that part of ourselves. 🙂
Oh geez, Arinel… Spiritual Dragonfly has me all discombobulated this morning and your comment Like at dusk, when is the moment of nightfall? is just too perfect. That’ll be ringing in my head all day now. (I don’t know why it keeps making everyone sign in. It’s starting to annoy me.) Love you ever and always, my dear friend! ❤
Really? So I’m not the only one who feels like they need an exit strategy when they stop fitting in? That’s the second time your comment has helped me not feel like a nincompoop, Jay. Thank you…
