SO! The guys give me the evil eye every time I pull this little book out to start a discussion. Too bad because I think there’s some great little questions in this little book. Like…
If you could suddenly possess an extraordinary talent in one of the arts, what would you like it to be?
This is an easy question for me, but also a hard one to pin down a specific answer to. The area of talent would definitely be music. And for a very selfish reason. I would like to be able to express my joys and triumphs and sorrows and longings through music. There’s a part of me that has always thought if I could do that I would feel so much more harmonious within myself.
The harder part for me is picking what instrument I’d love to play! I actually began playing the violin in third grade and would have loved to continue — but for stage fright! I bought a beautiful antique upright piano that has turned into a beautiful piece of furniture after two years of piano lessons (at 52) which I sucked at. The other instrument would be the cello. I love a mellow cello. But then I also love a mellow sax. AND a mellow French horn…
See what I mean? Perhaps I should take up the accordion? Move over Lawrence Welk!
What about you? How would YOU answer that question?

I’d be a better violinist than I am now, but I’d still be a violinist.

Oh, if I could have done everything in the arts, I would have loved to sing while I played the string bass. I can sing and drive, sing and shower, hum and garden, but when I played the string bass in high school it was like two different parts of my body were working at the same time, like patting my head and rubbing my belly in a circle. I would of course be singing sultry jazz tunes in a smoky night club while playing the bass. Not, gonna happen… I only played classical bass and sang madrigals, christmas carols, Duran Duran and Depeche Mode songs. I’m not anywhere near Nina Simone.

I would want to be a ballet dancer. I danced in a ballet company through high school and loved the feel of moving my body through space. Alas, bad ankles and less-than-limber older body keep me from this joy now. Of course I would love to be a great writer, but I can still work on that at my age. Good question.

Dancer had crossed my mind, too. I’ve always wondered if it ever feels like swimming. I LOVE So You Think You Can Dance. 🙂

I’d be a singer on Broadway belting out fabulous show tunes…no…a singer of Disney songs in Disney movies with power and range to spare. Now, don’t get me wrong, I think I can sing, but I’m told (politely) that I can’t. Guess it will have to be in my next go-round.

I love music. I studied voice but gave it up to pursue science. I also love art. My boys all inherited the music and art talents, though they too pursued different career paths. In the end we all chose something where we could support ourselves, lol.

It always comes back to that, doesn’t it. Being able to do what we can to support ourselves instead of following our bliss…. Why are we so hesitant to give our dreams a shot, I wonder…

Also music. I would play guitar and write songs. Friends would come over and I’d play guitar whilst we had a sing song into the wee hours. When I was younger I wanted to play the electric guitar, be in a band and live the rock star life haha! Mostly though, I thought it would impress the boys haha!

That was my childhood, watching my dad and his friends sit around the campfire at the cabin playing music and singing while neighbors from down through the forest came round to sit and listen and sing. Those are the fondest memories of my life. 🙂

My thunks didn’t take me to museums. They took me to awesome works of art – painting, sculpting have always intrigued me but I’m all thumbs when it comes to producing works of my own in those genre.
