I was just over at Making it write reading one of Jane Basil’s poems. That girl has been on a roll lately! The one I read really echoes some of what I’ve been feeling the past several weeks.
Space to breathe
Is it wrong of me to turn the key
with a sigh of relief
the moment I’m alone?
I only want some space to breathe
from those who sow such greedy weeds,
where weeds should not be sown.
Is it wrong that though I need to sleep
I put off counting leaping sheep
the moment I’m alone?
for when I’m in the grip of dreams
the peace I feel does not seem real;
I wake and it has gone.

Now I don’t have much trouble with the sleep thing, but BOY could I use a little space for myself. In fact, the first part of Jane’s poem made me wonder what kind of space I’d like to have IF I could have some space for myself — a place that no one knew I had. What would be in it? Hm…
It would be a small office in an office building somewhere. A building with good security. I get a little nervous when I’m alone. One room, but with a private toity as I don’t relish ten trips down the hall a day. It would be a place for me to runaway to and just soak up the quiet. OR a place for me to seclude myself to write. It would need a window I could look out of for sure. Don’t want to get claustrophobic, and a window is good for day dreaming and inspiration.
But what would I furnish it with?
- Obviously a nice cherrywood desk with matching chair and bookshelves. And tons of my favorite books from home.
- My laptop would be on my desk as well as a printer.
- There would HAVE to be an old pitcher full of fresh flowers every day.
- The drawers would be filled with markers, stickers, colored pens, fine-point RSVP pens for my journal, and top-bound spiral notebooks — no fancy journals for me.
- A dictionary, a rhyming dictionary, a thesaurus.
- And you would notice the lack of any kind of office phone.
- There would also be a couch with a little coffee table in front of it and lamps on each side. NO overhead lighting, please. I want the ambiance of soft light.
- On the coffee table would be an Old Country Roses tea service (my favorite china pattern from Royal Dalton), while on a wet bar on one wall would be a hot pot and an assortment of teas, coffees, chocolates, ciders, etc. And probably some nice cookies to nibble mindlessly on.
- There would be NO TV!!! Though I would likely have a cd player for writing or meditating by.
- The walls would be covered with ocean and forest prints.
- The shelves would be decorated with shells and rocks, candles and other special knick-knacks among the books.
- A nice rug on the floor would be dandy.
- And a separate thermostat to keep the place as hot as I wanted it is a must. Though I’d likely have a couple fleece throws on the couch (which would NOT, btw, be leather!) and a few throw pillows.
- And I nearly forgot! There would need to be a fireplace!!!
Color scheme? Some kind of green (sage, mint, etc.), sand, and white, maybe with a little blue and yellow accents thrown in here and there for contrast. All in all it would be very Coastal. But wait! You can’t have Coastal with a cherrywood desk and bookshelves. Hm… I might have to rethink the desk thingy.
The important thing about this space is that NO ONE would know where it was unless they were one of the few people who could be trusted to be quiet and give me space when I need it. THEN I might invite them over for tea. 😀 I like company now and then.
I actually have kind of described my little morning room I put in Bran’s old bedroom when he moved downstairs. But I seldom go in there because the house still feels crowded with people and lacking in privacy. But it’s a nice dream to think there might be a space like that somewhere for me one day. A place to go and actually spend time doing a second draft of Glencara’s Bane without the phone ringing or Bran wandering in to ask what’s for supper. I guess a girl can always dream.
Virginia Woolf wrote an essay called A Room Of One’s Own. The title of the essay comes from Woolf’s conception that, “a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction”. That’s probably not true, but I sure as heck would like to test the theory!
So my question for you, dear reader, is, if you could have a space of your own AWAY from your home and design it how you’d want it, what would it be like? Or would you even WANT that? If not, why not?
I’m just curious and snoopy. 😀 And if you happen to do a post designing your OWN inspiring room, please do leave me a pingback. I wanna see!

I sure do love that couch with the pale yellow wall, and picture on it. It looks like it would be in a place that’s tropical and warm. *sigh*
For me, I tend toward the bohemian. I love lots of flowing fabrics, and different colors. I found a picture somewhere on the web that in part fits what I’d like, but there are so many moods I have that I would need to put different motifs in connecting rooms. Yeah, that’s the ticket. 🙂

That’s kind of the way it is at our house. Like our bedroom is light green and white with all kinds of natural textures and woods. Very Zen. Every room is different.

There is this old ‘tourist’ attraction, in Rockport, MA, called Beauport (I think) and this was built by some millionaire, who had like a hundred rooms in his house, and each room represented a different era, and was just so amazing to visit.
I’ve always liked the idea of making a different room for different things I like. Q and I have named our rooms (and the house) for various things which we love: the kitchen is either The Brick (Northern Exposure eatery), or Kitchen Stadium, (Iron Chef). The bed room is Tranquility Base (Space/Northern Exposure also) and our bathrooms are The Fellowship Room (LotR) and Howarts (Harry Potter). Our garage is “the Landing Bay” LOL Yes, we’re quite eccentric. 😀

You room sounds wonderful….I’m not very good at writing out the tiny details…but I found a few photos of rooms that would fit me perfectly….will share in a post ☺️ You do deserve your space, your quiet ya know?!?!??! Your not asking to much by wanting and needing those things.
I think, sometimes, when a child leaves, and then comes home, they think it’s suppose to be the same as when they were children…..it’s not. Been there done that. As adults, moving back in doesn’t mean all holds bar, the kids take over. Im repeating myself, but you deserve and have the right to your space and your time. You’ve earned it! Rant Over!!!

Your room sounds so wonderful! I can’t wait to be living alone again so I can make my entire space into “my room.”

Just put an inside lock on the door and a DO NOT DISTURB sign on the outside of the door and it won’t matter that the house is crowded. People only take time that is given. You have every right to demand the privilege of your own company for two or more hours a day. If you wait for perfection, it never happens, Calen. Make this happen. You already have. You just need to use the room.

They wouldn’t come into the room without knocking. it’s not that. Unfortunately the walls in this cracker box are paper thin so it’s never quiet when Bran’s home. Either the TV is on or he’s playing music. Seriously, this is the noisiest house I’ve ever been in. I think it’s the incessant background noise, actually, that pert near drives me up the walls. And his work schedule is always nights during the week, so he’s here all day till he has to go to work. Honestly, he does try to be quiet. It’s all just unfortunate. You’ll laugh, but I wrote a lot of Glencara’s Bane in the car!

Ear plugs or earphones and your own type of music plugged into it. I’m not trying to be overbearing ( Just am–ha!) but sometimes the obvious solutions zip right past us.You say “they.” How many people live in your house, Calen? The cr is another good solution! For my first year of writing I went to the beach every day to write–or to a coffee shop. I know what you mean about the TV. I hate having it on all the time. Since I live alone, not a problem, since I only turn it on to watch movies on our film night. Could Bran be persuaded to use headphones or TV Ears? I will even send you a set if he would use them! It makes you able to hear the TV even when the sound is turned waaaaaay down. Should work with music also.

There are three adults (with all Bran’s wedding stuff) here in this starter home. It was never meant to be for a “family” to begin with. No, he wouldn’t use headsets. It’s like I said to Spiritual Dragonfly up above. There’s just something about them having to make their presence known. Insecurity? He’s going through a separation and likely a divorce. Earplugs don’t really help. Even the TV from the family room downstairs is loud up here. The house just isn’t made well. We should have moved a long time ago.

Thanks for the link-up Calen! I’d like to do a post on this, but I think I may get too bogged down in the detail. Mine would be a yurt in a wood, down a boggy lane at a secret location in a deciduous woodland. The canvas sides would roll up at the pull of a cord, so that I’d be able to breathe and look at the woodland floor and the trees as I write. It would have a beautiful day-bed upholstered in hand-sewn patchwork, that I would rarely use, but I’d admire it every day. he desk would be large, because my work-space gets messy, but there would be plenty of shelving and a couple of easily accible cupboards, because i also like to begin my day in neat surroundings. I’d be off-grid, with efficient solar powered electricity, and the coffee-pot and my Earl Grey tea would be to close at hand. My fridge would be full of all the cheeses that I love, and the bread-maker would be churning out freshly baked seeded wholemeal bread.
There would be lovely rugs on the floor, and linen, cotton and slik cushions of all sizes scattered around. Walking in would be like wandering into an earthy sunset – if there was such a thing – splashed with the richest blue, gold and wine.
I think I should stop now…

Oh! You love Victorian jewel colors! They used to be my favorite, too, till I started reading Joan Anderson’s books. that I would rarely use, but I’d admire it every day Yes, yes, yes! I KNOW that feeling. That’s why I keep my rocks and lighthouses around. Your place sounds really cool, and I can just see you there.

I forgot to mention that although it’s sometimes cold there, the sun always shines in the daytime and it only rains at night, when the fairies come to wash my dishes. In return I plant little gardens for them, full of herbs and wild carrot.
You can visit me there, because I know you won’t tell anybody where it is…
